Clos Villemaurine – Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (2002)

This ones a bit special, a Christmas present I was saving to stave off the new year blues. This classic merlot, cabernet franc blend is an excellently aged example of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.

In the glass, this wine gives a brilliantly rich tawny appearance, dragging you in straight away with its elegant shine! A clean, pronounced nose of red cherries, oak, smoke and sweet spice showcases the complexity that this prestigious red demands.

The depth continues on the palate with vibrant red cherry balanced with vanilla oak and the sweet raspberry spice of cabernet franc. Strong tannins are balanced with good acidity to give a smooth, long finish.

With the Clos Villemaurine vineyard under new ownership since 2014, this 2002 example could represent the end of an era for this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru estate.
